Brief Description

RTI is striving to set a new benchmark in mental health care for theworld’s refugees. Through innovative programmes of psychosocialsupport, education and training, we resource refugees, aid workersand organisations with skills and tools to deal with stress, insecurityand trauma. In less than three years, we have grown into a leadingprovider of psychosocial support to refugees in Northern Greece.We also offer services to aid workers and organisations serving refugees,helping to build their capacity and extend the reach of our methods.

Vision & Mission

Refugee Trauma Initiative provides vital psychosocial support to refugees experiencing trauma of war, torture and displacement. As part of our stated mission, we also train and support humanitarians, helping them to provide the best possible care for those in need. We believe that, by connecting with communities in their own language, and by providing them with continuing care, support and guidance informed by psychological principles, we can help them to process their experiences and foster their integration into society. Our approaches are simple and scalable so that they can adapt to a variety of settings and programmes.

Aims & Activities

Psychosocial support helps individuals and communities to heal their psychological wounds and rebuild social structures after an emergency or a critical event. RTI’s approach to psychosocial support is multi-layered. First, our team of therapists and support workers offer native-language one-to-one counselling, group sessions and wellbeing-centred activities, including mindfulness, art therapy and movement therapy. Second, our programmes and activities are especially designed to promote secure, supportive relationships and foster agency and a sense of belonging. In short, ourwork empowers refugees to be the necessary support for themselves, their families and their communities.
